Brass Ingot Characteristics

Copper constitutes more than 50% in the composition of brass alloys. Zinc appears in concentrations between 5% and 45%, depending on the desired brass ingot.

By adding other components, such as tin, lead, iron, nickel, manganese, aluminum, it is possible to obtain brass alloys with multiple properties, to serve the foundry industry in the manufacture of a wide range of components, parts and products.

Humanity has used the golden and malleable metal called brass for over 4,000 years. This success results from the plurality of its physical, chemical and production characteristics, such as:

Due to its characteristics of resistance to corrosion and mechanical impacts, brass is an easy-to-handle material, and can be forged, rolled, cast and cold drawn with greater versatility than can be extracted with copper and zinc alloys.

The presence of zinc modifies the melting point of the brass ingot. The higher the zinc concentration, the lower the melting point of the alloy, which facilitates the casting process.

The color of brass changes according to the composition of the alloy, ranging from strong copper to light yellow, passing through gold, reddish and bright yellow. This variation is widely explored as an aesthetic resource by some industrial sectors, such as the jewelry and costume jewelry industries.

The prevalence of copper in brass ingot alloys gives the material antimicrobial properties. As a result, countless bacteria, viruses and fungi cannot survive on surfaces coated with this metal. This condition favors the use of brass in the manufacture of materials and utensils for kitchens, hospitals, bathrooms, medical centers, surgical instruments and medical equipment in general.
