Zamak Alloy

Zamac Alloy (Zamak Alloy) is the generic name for different kinds of metal alloys composed essentially of four chemical elements, whose initials give rise to the name:

  • Zinc
  • Aluminum
  • Magnesium
  • Copper (Kupfer, in German)

In Brazil, the acronym ending in C (Zamac Alloy) is more used than the one ending in K (Zamak alloy).

The characteristics of good corrosion resistance, strength, impacts and wear, combined with the low manufacturing cost, make the Zamak alloy the preferred raw material by many industries to produce large parts, components and products.

Zamac (Zamak) alloy properties

Zamac (Zamak) emerged in the 30’s of the 20th century in the USA and, since then, has been widely used by different industrial sectors. The special properties of Zamac (Zamak) alloy made that global zinc consumption only behind aluminum and copper.

Among these special properties, the low cost of Zamac (Zamak) alloy stands out. In addition, it has good strength and plastic deformability; it can be injected in a liquid state and under pressure, in steel or silicone rubber molds; it can be chromed, painted and machined, with excellent results in any of these processes.

It has a low melting point (between 385°C and 485°C, depending on the type of Zamak). This Zamac (Zamak) alloy property is responsible for the low consumption of electricity in the casting process, compared to other metals.

Zamak casting can be performed in permanent metal molds, using injection and centrifugation processes, which outperform conventional sand casting. Zamak alloy can be cast indefinitely without losing its original mechanical characteristics.

Types of Zamac (Zamak) alloy

There are several standardized formulations of Zamak alloys. Between them:

Zamak 2 Alloy:

It has high hardness and tensile strength, provided by the greatest copper content. It is used, for example, in the production of tools and molds for plastic injection or for stamping thin steel parts.

Zamak 3 Alloy:

It presents an efficient combination of strength, castability and ease of painting. It has tensile and impact strength, in addition to great ductility. It is successfully used in the manufacture of gas valves, blender, mixers, fans housings, refrigerator hinges, watch components, radio and television grids.

Zamak 5 Alloy:

In this formulation, copper is added to increase mechanical strength and hardness. Among all Zamac alloys, this is the most creep resistant and one of the most required alloys for pressure casting, next to Zamac 3.

Among other applications, Zamac 5 is used in the production of faucets, locks, buckles for belts and shoes, rivets and embellishments for bags, in addition to jewelry.

Zamak 8 Alloy:

Zamak 8 is an alloy specially developed for the centrifugal casting of small parts that require good surface finishes and a complex level of detail – such as jewelry and costume jewelry.
